本コースでは数学・数理解析専攻の大学院生を対象にし，数学のアイデアをどのように英語で表現するかに焦点を当てて英語の講義が行われます．このコースを受講することで，個人的な議論や論文の内容に関する議論を通して英語でのコミュニケーションの経験やルールに関する知識を獲得すると同時に，数学の学術論文誌で要請される英語記述力の基礎を身につけることができます．
本コースは，数学・数理解析専攻の全ての大学院生（人数が多い場合は修士課程学生を優先）に向けて開講されており，所定の評価基準をクリアして合格すれば，1単位が与えられます．なお，本単位はスーパーグローバルコース認定の単位として認定されますが，受講にあたっては必ずしもスーパーグローバルコースに登録している必要はありません．ただし，人数が多い場合は博士後期課程進学希望者を優先します．

［講師の紹介］
Jim De Witt, a graduate in Physics from Caltech who had previously worked at NASA, has been teaching for many years at several universities in Japan, including Kyoto University, giving classes on science, writing, ESL, computer graphics, and other areas. Mr. De Witt also has extensive experience in writing, editing, and proofreading scientific documents for publication in international journals.
［概 要］
This course, intended primarily for students of the Master’s Degree Course in Mathematics, will focus on the presentation of mathematical ideas in the English language.
Students will gain knowledge of principles and experience in English communications through informal presentation and discussion of existing articles, and will gradually develop an original article, based on fact or fantasy, in accordance with general structural requirements of mathematics journals for a final, formal presentation in class.
Evaluation will be based on individual participation, effort, and comprehension, without inter-student comparison. Lectures will not focus on grammar or other aspects of language ability, and there will be no assessment of a student’s abilities in these areas. Therefore, no prerequisite level of English ability is prescribed.
